PALLAS applies for Nuclear Energy Act permit from the ANVS and Water Act permit from Rijkswaterstaat

06 July 2022

Last month, Foundation Preparation Pallas-reactor applied for the Nuclear Energy Act (KEW) permit from the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) for the realisation of the PALLAS-reactor. PALLAS also applied for the Water Act permit from Rijkswaterstaat. These two permit applications are linked and are an important step forward in the realisation of the new (research) reactor for medical isotopes in Petten.

The realisation of the PALLAS-reactor requires permits under the Nuclear Energy Act and the Water Act, among others. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report is also required. This report systematically and objectively describes all the environmental consequences of the reactor and several alternatives to these. The ANVS sees to it that nuclear safety and radiation protection in the Netherlands meet the highest standards. The ANVS lays down rules, grants permits, monitors compliance, and can take enforcement action. The application of this KEW permit is assessed primarily in terms of the design, the PALLAS organisation, and the related nuclear safety.

For more information, the submitted documents, and the process, we refer you to the website of the ANVS (link). For more information about the PALLAS project we refer you to this part of the website of PALLAS. You can also find information on the website about the financing of the project. The Dutch government has yet to make a decision about the PALLAS reactor.
