Construction progress

31 March 2025

Construction works have been progressing on the PALLAS project. 60km north from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, by the town of Petten, the new medical isotope reactor will be built. Since the second half of 2022, the eastern side of the Energy & Health Campus has been transforming to allow for the construction of the PALLAS-reactor and its surrounding buildings. As of March 2025, the supporting structure for the construction of the new reactor is delivered shortly.  The PALLAS Programme organisation has been moving towards the start of the construction.

2 years since the first concrete was poured at the construction site of the PALLAS-reactor, the construction pit is nearing its completion. The hole, into which part of the PALLAS-reactor building is later placed, measures impressive 50 meters by 50 meters and 17.5 meters deep. The construction pit is a vital supporting structure enabling construction of the PALLAS-reactor building.

As part of the latest series of works at the bottom of the construction pit, the total of 790 tons of steel reinforcement bars have been placed in layers. In the final step, a 1,5-meter thick layer of concrete is poured across the whole surface of the pit’s bottom. That will deliver the foundation floor of the PALLAS-reactor.

For the realisation of the construction works on the construction pit, NRG PALLAS has partnered with BESIX. The design has been delivered by ICHOS – a long-term partner contracted for the design of the PALLAS-reactor.

In the meantime, NRG PALLAS is moving towards the start of construction of the PALLAS-reactor and other parts of the new nuclear infrastructure build on the Energy & Health Campus. Jointly developed with FCC (the general contractor) and ICHOS (the main designer), the planning for the upcoming construction works is in place. In coming months, the site will keep transforming: the construction staff office for 250 people will be installed, first works on the PALLAS-reactor, and its secondary colling system building will commence.

Collaborative efforts within the organisation remain essential as preparations advance. The PALLAS Programme organisation and its partners proudly work together to deliver the infrastructure that is of great importance to thousands of patients worldwide every day.
