On the 19^th of May 2021, the European Commission and the Dutch Ministry of Health hosted a meeting for the EU Member States on the security of EU supply of medical radioisotopes for beating cancer and the role of the PALLAS project.

The goal of this meeting was to have a better picture of what is needed to secure the future supply of medical radioisotopes in the EU for diagnostics and the development of innovative treatments of cancer and to discuss how the Member States and the Commission could cooperate on specific radioisotope supply projects and initiatives.

The minister for Medical Care, Tamara van Ark, emphasised the importance of EU cooperation to ensure the security of supply of medical radioisotopes in Europe, in particular for the development of innovative cancer treatments. According to the minister, the PALLAS-project could, together with other European initiatives, play an important role.

Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan

Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan is a political commitment to turn the tide against cancer. The plan is aimed at improving the prevention, early detection, access to innovative cancer diagnosis and treatment in the EU and the quality of life of cancer patients and survivors. The SAMIRA action plan is the first deliverable of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. The objectives of SAMIRA are to:

Secure the supply of medical radioisotopes;
Improve the quality and safety of medical applications of ionising radiation;
Stimulate innovation and technological development in this field.
One of the ambitions is to launch a ‘European Radioisotopes Valley Initiative’ (ERVI) aiming to maintain EU’s position in the supply of medical radioisotopes and help accelerate the development and introduction of new radioisotopes and production methods.
